There will be 200 more jobs in new multinationals in Santa Maria da Feira

The Mayor of Santa Maria da Feira, Emídio Sousa, announced  today that 200 jobs new jobs are expected to be created in footwear and watchmaking multinationals that are preparing to settle in the municipality.

One of these new units belongs to Magnanni, the Spanish-based company that manufactures high-end men's footwear and plans to create a new 10,000-square-metre factory at the Materials Recovery Business Park in Pigeiros.

According to Emídio Sousa, the brand intends to create 100 new jobs at the start of its activity, although "there is the possibility of hiring more people in the future".

Swiss multinational Multicuirs, which manufactures high-end watchmaking for brands such as Cartier, is expected to have its Feira unit in operation in 2018 and will initially create 20 jobs, with the possibility of "hiring 80 more people at a later stage" of production.

The first batch of employees will receive training in Switzerland before entering service at the factory, which will occupy 12,000 square metres in the business park north of the Europarque congress centre.

Emídio Sousa emphasized that this industrial area is becoming specialized in new technologies, while the area next to the entrance of Europarque is becoming "a health cluster", as, in addition to the Lenciones oncology clinic, it is also preparing to welcome bioengineering company BoneEasy, which already develops customized bone grafts in Ovar and custom dental implants.

The construction project for the new unit is under approval by the city council and involves 5,000 square metres of land.

"Since we intend to attract researchers and brains to this area, we are also creating better conditions so that these people can have their children study there," said Emídio Sousa. "That is why, within this perimeter, a new private school is being created with an educational offer of great rigor and exigency," he revealed.

For the mayor, investments such as these have contributed to the reduction of unemployment in the municipality, which in 2013 had more than 10600 people without a job, 15.1% of the population, and currently there are 5500, i.e. 7.5%.

"This evolution is absolutely remarkable, because we have always wanted to lower unemployment to a rate below double digits, but I never thought to reach these numbers," admits the mayor.

"This strengthens our conviction that the investments we have brought to Feira and that are entering the construction phase in the coming months will lead, within one to two years, to a situation of full employment in the municipality," concluded the mayor.
