Santa Maria da Feira wants to develop cooperation with Cape Verde

"There are conditions conducive to increased cooperation between companies from Santa Maria da Feira and Cape Verde" - said Emídio Sousa. The mayor of Santa Maria da Feira took part in the opening of the Portugal - Cape Verde Economic Forum, held at the Europarque, which was attended by the Prime Minister of Cape Verde.

The exporting tradition of the region of Santa Maria da Feira was highlighted by Emídio  Sousa. The municipality boasts 15 thousand companies, including almost five thousand industrial companies, and is the second region of the country with the most footwear exports, right after Felgueiras.

He mentioned that several entrepreneurs from Santa Maria da Feira are already active in Cape Verde, in such areas as paints, tools or electrical material. "Cape Verde is among the most developed African countries, and it is a country that knew perfectly how to target (Portuguese?) businesses and open itself to world trade, as well as investing in infrastructure", Emídio de Sousa emphasized. He regards Cape Verde as a promising country with open people, which currently has a great opportunity in sectors such as industry, technology or tourism.

Growing market

The size and growth potential of the Cape Verde market was addressed by its prime-minister, Ulisses Correira e Silva.

"As you know, Cape Verde is a small country, with a population of 500 thousand inhabitants, and a GDP of four thousand dollars." Despite its size, he regards the market as attractive and competitive for foreign companies.

"First of all, tourism is our largest export market, which necessarily amplifies the domestic market, and we are already talking about an industry that represents more than 10% of GDP", he explained. As he sees it, it is a sector that has to grow and at high rates. The objective is to make tourism more diversified in terms of products and of destinations, islands, and with greater multiplier effects on the local economy.

A region with 300 million inhabitants

For Ulisses Correia e Silva, CDO, of which Cape Verde is a member, represents a market with more than 300 million consumers, of whom 80 million are in West Africa. "Many Portuguese companies, particularly in the construction sector, are winning tenders in countries like Senegal and Ghana, through Cape Verde, And Cape Verde, through a bank that also operates in West African countries, guarantees credit, gives credibility and provides market knowledge"- he said.

Cape Verde also has the advantage of providing foreign investors with exchange stability and the freedom of capital transfers.
