SANTA MARIA DA FEIRA IS IN THE POSITION NUMBER 5 OF THE NORTHERN MUNICIPALITIES WITH GREATEST FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE

According to the news published by Jornal de Notícias, last week, of the 86 municipalities in the north of the country, only 15 reached 50% in terms of their own revenue percentage. The municipality of Santa Maria da Feira is ranked in the fifth position in the list of municipalities with the greatest financial independence, with 64% of its own revenues.

The municipality in the Northern region with the greatest financial independence, in terms of percentage, is Porto (84% of own revenue); followed by the municipalities of Maia (72%), Matosinhos (67%), Vila do Conde (65%), Santa Maria da Feira (64%), Vila Nova de Gaia (63%), Póvoa de Varzim (63% ), São João da Madeira (59%), Vila Nova de Famalicão (57%), Braga (56%) and Gondomar (56%).

In this sense, the overwhelming majority of municipal city halls in the North of Portugal did not achieve, in 2018, "financial independence", with their own revenues exceeding 50% of the total income, revealed the report of the Norte Portugal Regional Coordination and Development Commission  (CCDRN). "The remaining 71 city halls survive based on funds mainly coming from third parties, with particular emphasis on the State that channels most of these values", says the daily newspaper.

The CCDRN report also states that "financial independence is greater in large-sized municipalities, given their capacity to collect revenue, particularly from municipal taxes to which they are entitled".

In the list of municipalities with less independence comes first Vimioso (13%), followed by Vinhais (14%), Tabuaço (14%), Freixo de Espada à Cinta (16%), Carrazeda de Ansiães (17%), Cinfães (17%), Mondim de Basto (19%), Murça (19%), Vila Flor (19%), Mogadouro (20%) and Paredes de Coura (20%).
