Portuguese Cork in China

The first initiative of the InterCork III program in the most populous country in the world featured a stand in Beijing.

The Portuguese Cork Association - APCOR is investing 600,000 euros in China in actions to promote and divulge corks and their benefits. The Chinese market is the world's fifth largest wine consumer and the fourth largest importer of bottled wines in the world.

The first initiative of the InterCork III program in this market featured a stand at WalMart in Beijing. In two days, it received the participation of 600 people, who were given cork stoppers and coasters with a printed Barcelos Rooster, since China has just entered the year of the Rooster. There are also planned actions with opinion leaders, training with wine educators, increment of digital platforms, recycling programs, participation in fairs, partnerships with retail and visits to Portugal.

"China is an influential market and, in this sense, we want them to know our properties and advantages." The Australian market, for example, has turned its attention to cork because of the clear preference of the Chinese for our stoppers, since, according to the CRT Market Research, 84 percent of consumers prefer to buy wines sealed with cork," said João Rui Ferreira, the president of APCOR. Promotion with the Chinese market began in 2011, with the first InterCork, and 730 thousand euros have already been invested.

The InterCork program, which includes promotion in China, is funded by Compete 2020, Portugal 2020 and the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund.
