NEW RETAIL BUSINESS GROWS 50%

In the first nine months of the year, the retail sector registered more 620 businesses, which represents a growth of 50% when compared to the same period in 2018, according to data from Cushman & Wakefield.
The openings were dominated by the street commerce, with more 410 stores being opened, constituting 67% of the commercialized units.

The malls represent 18% of the operations, as a result of the expansion and renovation projects of some of these commercial spaces in Portugal.

"The Cushman & Wakefield analysis also notes that the national retail chains have increased their representation, with 31% of closed deals, although still below independent operators, with 46%”, refers the consultant.

In the logistics area, the consultant indicates that the activity remains below expectations, with an occupation volume fixing in the 47.200 square meters in the first nine months of the year. This figure corresponds to half of the traded volume in the same period of 2018. "In the third quarter of 2019, it was registered the second largest business of the year, concerning Sandometal’s occupation of a logistics unit with 6.300 square meters in Azambuja”, adds the document.

The explanation for this performance lies in the scarce supply of quality modern facilities. This situation can be gapped by the launching of projects from Northern Lisbon Logistics Platform, Merlin Properties and the sustainable logistics project from Aquila Capital.
