More than 800 foreign-funded companies created in 2017 in Portugal

More than 800 companies with control of foreign capital were created last year in Portugal, which represented the 'highest value of the decade', most of which are controlled by Spaniards and in the services sector.

According to Informa D & B's analysis, "in 2017, 815 companies with foreign capital controls were born, mostly Spanish, almost twice as much as in 2010, a phenomenon that has grown since 2013, reaching, in 2017, the highest value of the decade. "

As for the sectors, a quarter (203) of these new companies were in the services sector, followed by real estate (183) and telecommunications (73).

In all, last year, there were 9,705 Portuguese companies with foreign participation in their capital (including companies with capital control and without capital control).

This share amounted to 47% of turnover, 72% of banking income, 92% of insurance premiums, 62% of exports and 25% of employment of all companies.

"Insurance, telecommunications and banking are the sectors that show more openness to foreign capital. Regarding the turnover generated by foreign-controlled companies, this is mostly concentrated in industries, wholesalers and retailers," reports Informa D & B.

The consultant points out that "the presence of foreign capital is growing through the formation of new companies, but also by the acquisition of national companies of all sizes and sectors."

"The acquisition operations in banking and insurance contributed significantly to the increase in the value of foreign investment in companies in Portugal," it points out, noting that "the large numbers associated to the companies with foreign capital are explained by the preference to participate in the capital of the larger companies".

Thus, for companies with a turnover of more than 50 million euros, 64% have foreign participation in their capital and 48% have control of foreign capital.
