CORK LEADS NATIONAL FORESTRY PRODUCTION IN 2018

According to statistics released by the National Statistics Institute (INE, in Portuguese) released recently, in 2018, cork was the most relevant product (38.2%) of national forestry production, a position that it had lost since 2004, for wood to crush.

In the publication available on INE’s website, it is highlighted the changes that the structure of national forestry production has registered over the last years, since the wood to crush reached 42.5% of the production in the period 2010- 2014.

Statistics show that the Gross Value Added (GVA) of forestry decreased by 2.1% in volume and increased by 5.3% in value in 2018, when there was an increase in intermediate consumption (CI, in Portuguese), in volume and value (10, 1% and 15.7%, respectively).

According to INE, in that year it observed a nominal increase in the forestry production (8.3%), to which contributed, mainly, cork (+ 25.1%) and forest services (+ 21.7%), which compensated the 3.1% decrease in wood production, after the high supply verified in the previous year, following the great forest fires (from June and October 2017).

"The sharp increase in CI was fundamentally determined by the component related to forestry services (namely, cleaning and forest thinning operations, collection of leftovers and construction of fire breaks)", explains INE.

Cork production has registered successive nominal increases since 2013, and in 2018 it registered an increase of 25.1% over the previous year, to which contributed an increase of 6% in volume and 18% in price.

According to INE, the price has shown an increasing trend since 2013, related to the commercialization of superior quality cork necessary for the manufacture of stoppers suitable for the conservation of quality wine, either for the national market or for export.

In terms of trade balance, the balance of cork-based products is positive and 2018 registered the highest value, including cork stoppers, materials for civil construction, decoration or insulation.

Net business income1 (REL) from forestry exploitation increased by 6% in 2018, a situation that has not been seen since 2015, to which contributed the positive nominal variation in GVA of forestry (5.3% more).
