Comuniti online supermarket is already selling certified Fogaça to support local production

The Comuniti.pt platform has started selling Fogaça with Protected Geographical Indication, following a product selection process that involved the Municipality of Santa Maria da Feira, where this sweet bread originates from, and the institution that represents the duly certified local manufacturers.

With the inclusion of this delicacy in its food goods catalogue, the online supermarket, which distributes throughout the country, reinforces its strategy of supporting national and regional production, boosting consumer access to a specialty with a long historical and cultural tradition and a solid gastronomic reputation.

"We tested fogaça in several contexts and we can guarantee that the product maintains all its qualities during the delivery process, which, in mainland Portugal, can take from 24 to 48 hours”, says Rui Adrego, cofounder of Comuniti. "We hope that, with the introduction of this new product, we can enhance the shopping experience of our consumers, especially during the current period, with Easter being celebrated with fewer people at the table and one having to discover new pleasures in order to stay optimistic and raise family spirits”.

Fogaça

The introduction of fogaça in Comuniti's offer resulted from the initiative of the Municipality of Santa Maria da Feira, which, knowing the strategy of the online supermarket based in that same municipality, called for the region’s most emblematic sweet to be marketed on their e-commerce platform.

Mayor Emídio Sousa says that the partnership with the new online sales channel came about "naturally" within the scope of the municipality's gastronomy promotion strategy: "We already have a long experience in promoting fogaça and we know that it is a product that will please everyone, not only for its taste and texture, but also for its historical symbolism ”.

The selection of the manufacturer that will respond to the daily demand for this castle-shaped sweet bread involved the Feira Fogaça Producers Grouping, which contacted several brands and identified all those that were able to meet Comuniti's requirements. The association then collected a specimen of fogaça made by each of these manufacturers and a blind test was then carried out to identify the most consensual one regarding different criteria, including flavour, texture, appearance, packaging and resistance to medium and long haul transportation.

The chosen fogaça will now be on sale at 5.99 euros in the 500 grams version and at 7.99 in the one kilo format.
