Guimarães, Santa Maria da Feira, Vila Nova de Famalicão

Textile Penedo, a textile company from Guimarães, in partnership with Sedacor, a cork company from S. Paio de Oleiros, produced the Cork.a.Tex-Yarn - a cotton yarn lined with cork waste - and won one of the seven Techtextile Innovations Awards, in Germany, placing Made in Portugal textiles at the top of innovation worldwide, said Guimarães Marca, an entrepreneurship agency from Guimarães.

This is the first time Portugal has won the most ambitioned award of the world's top textile innovation. Cork.a.Tex-Yarn, a cork-coated cotton yarn, developed by Textiles Penedo and Sedacor, in collaboration with Citeve and FEUP.

Cork.a.Tex-Yarn was the only one of the seven award-winning products highlighted by the jury's president, the Belgian Jan Laperre, in the speech before the awards. "Our task is made easier when products such as cork-coated wire appear. Not only is it a natural product, which adds insulation and thermal properties to the wire. It is also a magnificent example of circular economy, as it takes advantage of waste from the cork industry and it is an excellent example of research in the sector”, said the jury president.

Braz Costa, general director of Citeve, would not fail to show his enormous satisfaction with this mark in the Portuguese industry and in which his institution is also involved. "It is with great pride that 16 years after being at Techtextile looking at what was then the most advanced in our industry with wide eyes, like a kid with his nose staring at the glass of the chocolate shop window, I see that our ITV has reached the top of innovation worldwide - and that being internationally recognized”, he told the newspaper T.

It is important to note that Textile Penedo, a textile company from Guimarães, has also entered the sustainability honor roll of this edition of Techtextile, the most important technical textiles fair in the world.
