96% OF COMPANIES ARE ALREADY OPERATING

INE monitors the impact of the pandemic on companies

In the second half of June, the percentage of companies in operation was 96% (+1 p.p. than in the previous half). The results released by INE refer to the Quick and Exceptional Business Survey - COVID-19, a project that aims to closely monitor the business reality. Highlight for the Accommodation and restaurant sector, where the percentage increased by 5 p.p., reaching 82%. Comparing the results over the second quarter, the improvement is more noticeable, with the percentage of companies in operation increasing from 83% in April to 96% in June.

During the second quarter, the percentage of companies with reduced turnover, in view of the expected situation without a pandemic, decreased from 80% in April to 67% in June.

In view of the situation that would be expected without a pandemic, in the second half of June, 66% of companies reported a negative impact on turnover (compared with 68% in the previous half). Accommodation and restaurant as well as Transport and storage were the sectors with the most companies reporting reductions in turnover (87% and 80%, respectively).

Compared to the previous half, 37% of the companies reported a turnover stabilization and, among the others, the percentage that showed increases was higher than the proportion that showed reductions (34% and 28%, respectively).

Furthermore, 36% of companies reported a reduction in the number of employees actually working taking into consideration the situation that would be expected without a pandemic (39% in the previous half). Accommodation and restaurant companies stood out with 64% referring to a negative impact on employed persons (-3 p.p. than in the previous half). Comparing the results over the second quarter, there was also a decrease in the percentage of companies that reported a negative impact on staff actually working, taking into consideration the expected situation without a pandemic (from 59% in April to 38% in June).

Compared to the first half of June, most companies did not report changes in the number of people employed (72%). Accommodation and restaurant was the sector that registered the highest percentage of companies with an increase in the number of employees in service compared to the previous half (33%), in most cases due to the reduction in the number of people in layoff.

46% of the respondent companies had teleworkers in the second half of June (-1 p.p. compared to the previous half) and more than 55% of the companies do not foresee the use of Government support measures excluding the simplified layoff.
