52% SAY CONSUMPTION OF NATIONAL PRODUCTS IS A "DUTY"
With the closure of borders, all over the world, this crisis showed once again the dependence of many countries on foreign suppliers. In addition to this, the prospect of a new economic crisis shows the importance of producing and consuming national products. Portuguese people who answered the Observador Cetelem Consumption survey 2020 seem to agree.
About 49% of Portuguese people see the consumption of national products as "priority", followed by 45% who say they are "important". When asked about the reasons for consuming products made in Portugal, respondents refer the contribution to job creation (82%), promotion of economic development (62%) and the superior quality of the products (57%).
For Portuguese people, Portuguese products are still "safer, whose origin and composition are known" (28%). For 23%, support for local production is still important for the promotion of social ties. They are still mentioned as being a way of "preserving know-how" (11%); to limit the environmental impact (9%) and as being cheaper, when compared to imported ones (5%).
Consumption of local products
When asked about what it means to consume local products, produced in Portugal, most Portuguese people assume it as a "duty" (52%). After that, 30% say that this is goal they set out to achieve.
There are even those who say that consumption of local products is a "patriotic act" (29%), or a "pride" (19%). But the Portuguese people remain concerned about their ecological footprint and 12% say that this is an "action in favor of the environment".
The data registered this year reveal a growing trend of the importance of local consumption compared to that data registered in the Observador Cetelem Consumption in 2019, in which 45% of Portuguese people already said that buying local products was a duty (seven percentage points less than this year). The data of that period also revealed that for 28% it was a goal to achieve and 27% even assumed it was a patriotic act.
