I understood

Daring, irreverent, provocative: that is the Portuguese footwear communication campaign. Calling it "The Sexiest Industry in Europe" made a huge impact, demonstrated by multiple references in international fashion magazines.

Portugal's production of luxury shoes continues to move forward, and personalities like Nicolas Sarkozy, Hugh Jackman and Michael Bublé cannot do without Portuguese footwear made in Santa Maria da Feira.

The footwear cluster, which also includes the footwear components and leather goods  industries, takes on a fundamental role in the
country’s economy, placing Portugal on top of the international rankings for producers and exporters.

The footwear industry is a traditional sector in Santa Maria da Feira, made up of SMEs with a strong exporting potential,
targeting mainly Europe (France, Germany, Holland, Spain and the United Kingdom). The footwear industry has registered
a significant growth, gaining about 1000 workers between 2011 and 2012, and totalling about 6000 workers employed in the sector.

The numbers speak for themselves:

  • In 2016, Portugal exported 81.6 million pairs of footwear, a 27.9% increase as compared to 2009.
  • France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom are its main markets.
  • Santa Maria da Feira ranks second in terms of footwear exports (14%).

Footwear made in Portugal is already considered the best in the world for its quality, design, fashion sense and know-how.
