The footwear cluster, which also includes the footwear components and leather goods industries, takes on a fundamental role in the
country’s economy, placing Portugal on top of the international rankings for producers and exporters.
The footwear industry is a traditional sector in Santa Maria da Feira, made up of SMEs with a strong exporting potential,
targeting mainly Europe (France, Germany, Holland, Spain and the United Kingdom). The footwear industry has registered
a significant growth, gaining about 1000 workers between 2011 and 2012, and totalling about 6000 workers employed in the sector.
